How did oxalis become associated with St. Patrick's Day?
Saint Patrick, a Christian missionary, used a three-leaf ‘shamrock’ (Oxalis) to describe the Holy Trinity when first introducing Christianity to Ireland. He stated that the three leaves stand for the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. St Patrick also used a metaphor to describe the stem of the plant representing how each leaf is united into one.
Another fun fact about this plant is that four-leaf clovers are said to stand for faith, hope, love, and luck/good fortune. Children in the Middle Ages believed they would be able to see fairies if they carried Oxalis with four-leaves. In clover fields, the chances of finding a four-leaf clover are about 1 in 5,000!
