Pruning may be second nature to the experienced gardener or yard enthusiast, but it can be rather tricky if you have never dealt with it before. When pruning is done correctly it encourages new healthy growth and flowering if it is a flowering plant. Pruning is also how you control the size, shape and form of your plants.

Knowing where to start can be overwhelming just because of the sheer numbers of unique shrubs, trees and plants there are. Depending on what you are pruning and how much you are pruning the steps will be different. To be successful you must know what, where and when to cut and how much you plan to prune.

Maintenance pruning is when you selectively prune your plants. This is often done to maintain a desired shape or appearance. It will also keep your plants healthy for years to come.

  • Remove dead or dying branches injured by disease, severe insect infestation, animals, storms or other adverse mechanical damage.
  • Remove branches that rub together.
  • Remove stub branches.
  • Remove suckering branches at the base of the plant.
