Installation of mulch isn’t that difficult but the experts at Gertens have some tips to make it even easier.
- First up, where are you going to put it?
- Find the square footage of the area. It doesn’t have to be exact, close counts with mulch.
- Typically, you want mulch to be 4 inches thick when settled. Playgrounds should be 12 inches thick or more.
- Calculate how much you’ll need in cubic yards. For 4 inches thick divide your square footage by 80. Or make it easier with our mulch calculator.
- Choose your mulch. Check out our Types of Mulches. Bulk or bagged? Tip: a pallet of bags can be easier than scooping from a large pile.
- Delivery or pick up. If you don’t have enough room in your car or truck, we have rental trailers at our brickyard or have us deliver, sometimes same day.
- Think about where you want your pile of mulch (if bulk) or stack of bagged mulch. Do you want a tarp underneath for easier clean up?
Tools
- Wheelbarrow - There are large volume wheelbarrows (some with two wheels in front) for mulch since it is light.
- Steel tined garden rake - To move mulch around to its proper placement.
- Pitchfork - This works great for lifting bulk mulch into your wheelbarrow. (better than shovels)
- Landscape fabric and landscape staples - You may or may not want landscape fabric under your mulch. If you do be sure to staple it down so it doesn't move around as you bring mulch in.
- Start spreading the mulch in the intended areas and rake it out evenly with your garden rake.
That's it, you're done. Every few years add some additional mulch to freshen up.
