Deterring Rabbits

Sneaky bunny in our perennials

The Minnesota DNR states that rabbits are important game animals, highly valued for food and sporting qualities. The Gardener would likely disagree! Especially after they’ve munched your seedlings, nibbled on your perennials and shrubs and created general chaos while leaving little pellets behind. Note: the link to the MN DNR has information on hunting and trapping rabbits. Always consult with your local law enforcement first!

About:

  • Minnesota has 3 native bunnies. One rabbit species – the Eastern cottontail and 2 hare species, Snowshoe and White-tailed jackrabbit.
  • Our native cottontails are prolific producers. Every year a female can produce several litters of 4 to 6 babies. Because they have many predators, only about 1% reach 2 years old. However, they can start reproducing at 3 months old!
  • They can run up to 18 mph and leap up to 15 ft.
  • Using both eyes they can see 360 degrees
  • Their favorite foods are… everything in your garden. Well, almost.

What to do organically:

  • Fences are generally a more permanent solution. You need to bury ½ inch mesh fence about 6 inches to prevent burrowing and the fence should be 24 inches above the ground to prevent them from jumping. This would be a great idea for a vegetable garden as it also protects from other critters.
  • Plant deterrents include smelly flowers such as marigolds, ‘Spicy Globe’ basil, lavender, onions, garlic, catnip. Anything with a strong sent.
  • There’s getting a dog, but that’s a whole other discussion!

Repelling them with organic compounds:

  • Plantskydd comes in liquid, powder or granules. It is 100% dried blood (porcine and/or bovine). No animal parts. It is not harmful but “smells” like a predator. The granules can last up to 3 months, even in rain.
  • Rabbit Scram is one of our best products to create a barrier around perennials and shrubs. It is a granular and is a combination of dried blood, garlic, cloves and white pepper.
  • Liquid Fence is environmentally safe and biodegradable Often used to deter deer, it’s safe for your pets and your people!
  • Bonide Animal Repellent is made with 100% cayenne peppers. It will burn their mouths and stomach. It is a liquid that must be reapplied often for the first couple of weeks until animals are trained not to try it.
