Gertens Spruce tips are fresh black or white spruce that have been harvested in the North woods of Minnesota. They are found naturally in swamps and bogs and are sold in several different sizes.
Converting your annual containers into Spruce Tip Splendor! Or simply start fresh
Here's the How-To:
- Pull out all your Summer and Fall annuals.
- If the soil has already frozen, you can use boiling water to thaw it and press your spruce tips and other accents such as birch into the soil to secure them. Make sure the soil is a couple of inches below the top of the container. You do not want it flush or you’ll have a mess. You can also use a drill to create holes.
- Choose the size tips you want. For the best look buy a mix of sizes. Choose from King, Large and/or regular depending on how large your container is.
- Arrange the tips so the tallest is in the middle, making sure to press down into the soil to secure it. Then place the midsize to smaller all around the main tip to create the pyramidal look of a full tree. You may have to prune some of the bottom branches to make it easier to push into the soil. Very generally, a 12 inch pot will use 7 to 9 spruce tips. *Spruce tip size varies
- Use white pine and/or red pine boughs or cedar boughs to skirt the container and let them flop over the edge to add depth and texture.
- Attach ribbon and/or pinecones with wire to secure them in the wind.
- Add fresh cuts.
- Add your accents.

You can also add lots of other greens and accents to personalize your pots, planters, and window boxes. Gertens offers a wide variety of choices including dogwood and willow branches, cedar boughs, eucalyptus (natural and dyed red) and seeded. Check out the birch logs, magnolia bunches, both natural and dyed as well as berry spikes and cones. The list goes on! You're only limited by your imagination. You'll find everything you need at our Gertens store location and Gertens.com in our Fresh Greens. Spruce tips will last a long time so and there is no need to water them. They should be discarded and composted in the Spring.
