Colorful Fall Annuals

With fall comes a facelift for your gardens. The summer annuals are spent, it’s time to add some color to compliment those rich fall hues of orange, red, purple and gold. Gertens offers plenty of options.

• Garden Mums

Garden Mums are a classic. With a multitude of improved cultivars, the colors are nearly endless. Typically, an annual, you can improve its winter survival by planting in the soil with a root stimulator and mulch well. Gertens also carries Minnesota hardy mums.

• Flowering Kale

Flowering Kale are the perfect accent to add in with your mums and asters. Waxy, round or ruffled leaves in showy round heads that get 12" to 18” tall and 15" to 18” wide. Gray- green or rose w/ green.

• Herbs

Herbs can add distinct scents and texture to a container or garden. Consider santolina, oregano, rosemary, hyssop, caraway, lavender, marjoram, sage, peppermint, basil, thyme to name a few.

• Indian Summer Rudbeckia

Indian Summer Rudbeckia is an annual version of the popular perennial Black-eyed Susan. Large flower heads, green fuzzy foliage, big, bright yellow blooms. A taller fall blooming plant that works well in containers with mums, kale and asters.

• Pansies

Pansies are perfect in early spring and fall with their cold weather tolerance. They add a splash of color to containers and annual flower beds. Pansies grow 6" to 8” tall with flowers in a variety of colors.

• Pumpkins, gourds, and squash

Pumpkins, gourds and squash offer wonderfully weird shapes and colors in the garden and in your decorations. Once you've used them as decoration, bake the pie pumpkins and squash for tasty treats and don’t forget the seeds too!

• Perennials

Perennials can be a great alternative to annuals for height and texture in the garden as well as in containers. If planted in containers, you can overwinter the perennials by planting them in the ground a few weeks before frost. Grasses, Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia), Purple Coneflower (Echinacea), Sedums, Russian Sage, Joe Pye Weed, Asters, and Blanket Flower are a few examples of perennials that can add character to your containers and gardens.
