Benefits of Mulch

The benefits of mulch are many and it’s one of the easiest things you can do to benefit your yard and garden as well as add a great accent. Gertens offers numerous options for your every need.

Benefits:

  • Mulch prevents weed growth.
  • Protects plant roots in the winter.
  • Prevents frost-heaving in which plants are literally pushed out of the ground by the natural expansion and contraction of the soil as it cools off and heats up.
  • Keeps plant roots cool during the heat of summer.
  • Keeps the soil well aerated by reducing soil compaction which happens when raindrops hit the soil.
  • Reduces water runoff and soil erosion.

As mulch decomposes over time, the benefits don’t stop, it replenishes organic matter in the soil while preventing surface crusts and cracking. Your overall soil condition will benefit from the reduction of erosion and compaction, as well as the addition of new soil material.

Place a 3 inch layer of mulch in a new garden bed. Note: keep the mulch itself from touching the trunks of trees or the bases of shrubs to prevent rot from moisture retention and prevent creating a home for small critters. Think Donut not Volcano!
