Blossom End Rot

Blossom end rot can cause the fruit to spoil

Blossom end rot is a relatively common plant disorder that is primarily caused by a calcium deficiency in the soil. It can occur in various vegetables and fruits, but is most commonly found in tomatoes. Blossom end rot can be identified as a round, sunken, discolored spot on the blossom end of the fruit, furthest away from the stem. These spots continue to enlarge and turn dark brown to black and have a leathery texture. The areas will eventually rot and spoil the fruit.

Plants can be more susceptible to blossom end rot when planted in an area that has great fluctuations in soil moisture, very wet to very dry. These inconsistencies in soil moisture are more common in potted or containerized plants. This depletes the soil of calcium more quickly and in turn leads to plants developing blossom end rot as the fruit begins to mature. Although blossom end rot is relatively common and difficult to reverse, there are ways to help prevent it from developing and to control it on plants that are already showing symptoms.

Tomato Maker

One remedy proven to help in the prevention and treatment of blossom end rot is to fertilize your tomatoes and other vegetables with Tomato Maker 4-2-6. Tomato Maker is a natural based fertilizer and soil conditioner that produces a robust crop of firm, tasty tomatoes. It is a unique blend containing natural sources of major nutrients combined with Calcium, Magnesium, and Iron. The available calcium, 6.0%, corrects calcium deficiencies which lead to blossom end rot. Because blossom end rot is difficult to reverse, it is best to start using Tomato Maker right away when seeding or transplanting tomatoes.

If some of your tomatoes are already showing signs of blossom end rot, have no fear, you can still apply Tomato Maker to prevent new tomatoes on the same plant from developing the disorder. For best results, water in Tomato Maker after each application. It can also be partially dissolved in water and poured over the plant's root-zone. Mix at the rate of 1 tablespoon of Tomato Maker per 1 pint (16 oz.) of water. Apply Tomato Maker about every three weeks for best results.
