What should I do with my outdoor pottery in the Minnesota winters?

Glazed clay, thin-walled plastic, as well cement items (pots, planters, statuary, and fountains) all need to be kept out of the freeze/thaw cycle of late Autumn and Early Spring, in order to prevent cracking. Remove any annuals from the pot, lower the amount of soil so that the pot or planter is about ½-2/3 full only. Then allow the pot to sit inside a garage or shed, out of any rain or snow until temperatures stabilize above freezing. For items which are too large or heavy to bring in- allow them to dry fully before freezing weather arrives, then cover tightly with a tarp.
