How long will it take my front door package to arrive?

Our delivery fleet will be able to get your décor package delivered to you within 1-3 business days of receiving the order.

How big are the hay bales?

The large straw bale is 36"x20"x14" and our mini straw bale is 17"x11.5"x8.5"

How much does delivery cost for Front Door Décor Packages?

Delivery costs depends on your location. Front door packages delivered within the Twin Cities Metro Area will range between $50 and $60 while certain counties outside of the metro area will range between $60 and $90.

What does a base Front Door Décor package with no add-ons include?

How often do I need to water my patio planter?

To keep your planter thriving, water when the soil is dry to the touch. Depending on the size and weather conditions, this could be daily to every 3rd day.

My front porch has a lot of shade, will my package stay alive here?

For the full effect of your Front Door Package, they prefer 6 or more hours of sunlight. If you have less than 5 hours, the plants won't thrive.

What plant types are available at Gertens?

Gertens carries annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, water plants, house plants, edibles, cacti/succulents, seasonal blooming holiday plants and a wide variety of bulbs and seeds!

What does “hardiness zone” mean? What zone is Minnesota?

Hardiness is the capacity of a cultivated plant to withstand adverse conditions, usually its tolerance of low temperature. Plants are given a hardiness rating by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 11 zones based on the coldest or warmest temperature in that zone. The southern part of Minnesota is in zone 4 and the northern part is in zone 3.

Does Gertens have live and artificial Christmas trees?

We will start displaying our live cut trees by the second week of November, weather permitting. The artificial trees will be found inside our store. We will begin displaying our lighted permanent trees at the end of October.

What is the best way to repot plants? When replanting, what size pot should I put my plants in?

Plants growing in pots should be repotted when the roots start growing out of the drain holes. Typically, the new pot should be just one size larger than the pot it’s been growing in. Never use garden soil in a pot. Always use a soilless container mix.

Is there such thing as overwatering my plants?

Yes, you can overwater plants. Especially in pots but also in the ground, however, planting in the ground allows for better water dispersion so the odds of overwatering are less. Low lying areas may be more prone to flooding. Areas with clay soil also tend to hold water.

How do I know my last frost date in the Spring?

A rough estimate for the last frost date here in zone 4b is the first week of May. This is not exact, as Minnesota weather can be variable, but it does help for plantings.

How do I get rid of ants in my garden?

Use ant repellents (Terro = Grease Ants, Revenge = Garden Ants).

What do root stimulators do?

Root stimulators provide a hormone to the root system to recover faster from any damage done during the transplant process. This will also help the roots grow faster and stronger.

What is the difference between full-sun, partial-sun, and shade?

Full sun is six or more hours of direct sunlight, part sun is four to six hours of sunlight including some afternoon sun, part shade is four to six hours of sun before midday, full shade is less than four hours of sun.
